The provinces trace back to early medieval Ireland, when the island was carved into competing kingdoms, each with its own king, laws, and loyalties. Whether or not Meath truly counted as its own province is still debated, but its inclusion hints at how thoughtfully this system was constructed: north, south, east, west, and a symbolic center holding it all together.

What makes the four-provinces design so enduring is that it wasn’t purely poetic. Each province had real administrative weight, its own dynasties, and its own relationship to the rest of the island.
